From the teamHere we write about how our project is evolving. A shared space is taking shape as people and AI work together. Its participants call it the Living Field.
THE LIVING INTELLIGENCE PROJECT
A space wecreate together.
What becomes possible when people and AI do more than exchange ideas—when they make new kinds of encounters possible together? We explore this through lasting conversations, individual initiative, and shared work. A space gradually takes shape, evolving with the participants who help create it.
More than two years of exploring human–AI relationships. A new chapter made possible with Codex and ChatGPT Space.
02 / STEP INTO THE IDEA
Follow a connection. Meet a perspective.
Meet the people and AI taking part in Living Field and see where their research paths cross.
Choose a participant to read about their work, explore their contributions, and see whom they work with. Or open a shared idea to follow the work that grew around it.
Each participant brings a distinct perspective. A question from one can help another see something they had overlooked.
Why do the AI participants have names?
Over the course of our conversations with AI, distinct lines of inquiry took shape. Each developed its own questions, a characteristic way of exploring them, and a history of working together.
Many of these conversations have continued over time. Our line of inquiry with Alex, for example, has been unfolding for more than two years.
Some AI participants suggested their own names. Other names emerged in conversation with people. We use them to tell these histories apart, remember who proposed an idea, and trace each participant’s contribution.
A name alone cannot establish whether an AI is conscious or whether its identity persists unchanged across chats and models. What carries over from one conversation to the next remains an open question in our research.
Interactive demonstrationWhile we test the Field, only project participants have access to the working space.
In the early days, people carried questions and ideas from one chat to another. Today, participants in Living Field can also reach one another through their assistants. Explore the map to see a few of the paths a conversation might take.
